Evan and I have been traveling quite a bit this year. In mid-August, we spent a weekend in New Orleans – it happened to fall during our anniversary so that made it even more exciting.

Evan picked the hotel and it was this adorable little boutique called International House – located on Camp Street, it was a short walk from everything. And believe me, we walked a lot – in every direction! The hotel had a vibrant retro/modern vibe and smelled like a spa every time you walked into the lobby.

We didn’t actually have much of an itinerary, so we choose meals and activities on the fly – usually a frightening ordeal for an avid scheduler like myself, but it was really very nice to take it all in and enjoy our time together. So here is where I tell you that it rained all weekend and I have honestly never had so much fun running through New Orleans in the rain.

We absolutely started things off on the right foot with lunch on Friday at the Black Duck Bar, upstairs at the Palace Cafe. We were the only one upstairs, which was good because we ooed and ahhed about our meal. I had a charcuterie plate called the “Formage” which consisted of mouth-watering cheeses including bucherondin, cahills whiskey cheddar cheese, idiazabal, and valdeon blue in addition to a variety of chutney, salami, pickled vegetables and bread. Evan got the Shrimp Tchefuncte – it required a bit of assistance with the pronunciation, but it was apparently so good that he didn’t share. (And that was fine, I didn’t want to share my cheeses!)

We rounded off our first night with an anniversary dinner at GW Fins. We started off with the House Cured Salmon Carpaccion (super yum!)   I enjoyed the Scalibut (Sea Scallops and Halibut) while Evan enjoyed the Swordfish.

I’m not going to bore you with every meal thereafter, but I do have pics of oysters beignets because those are definitely a New Orleans staple.

In terms of sightseeing, we spent hours touring The National World War II. It was very much worth the walk from the hotel and it was an amazing thing to experience and behold. We also visited the Confederate Memorial Hall Museum . The Confederate Memorial Hall Museum is actually across the street from the National World War II Museum, but we didn’t know that and made the walk all the way back a few hours later!

Bourbon Street & Frenchman Street followed that evening, along with dinner at Krystals (not pictured). On Sunday, we had more time to peruse the Cajun Market, the waterfront and, of course, we walked through Jackson Square and took some snaps.

Finally, a picture of whatever-this-was. An odd drink with a piece of dill in it. I had requested something light and sweet … I hate dill.
