As a computer science major, one of the suggested requirements to graduate was to get involved in an extra curricular activity on campus. I thought the newspaper would be the place for me - I had always been commended for my writing skills and I had just left my post as head of our rogue high school newspaper.

The conversation with the editor did not go as planned; she was insistent upon needing a photographer and I just wanted to write. I guess I wore her down, she let me submit a story - a humorous detail about the parking situation at school. It had the laughs, tears, and pizzazz of an award-winning article. It would change the world! But it never got published. Instead, she handed me a camera and ushered me out the door for my first assignment.

And that's how I became a photographer. I don't have a great story about growing up with a camera in my hand. My life on the newspaper was an anything but glamorous array of rolled film (yes, I said the f word), developer and deadlines.

Here I am 13 [eek] years later and I can say that this is exactly where I want to be and I shoot fabulous people.

Trash The Album

My album supplier decided to run a contest where the entrants trashed a wedding album. It wasn’t about the cruelty of getting back at your clients or defacing a product, but the creative process of it all. When I saw the contest come up, I poked Michelle Peyronet and said we HAD to enter. So we sat around at lunch one day and made the most ridiculous list of things we were going to do to our stash of old albums. Most of our ideas involved explosions and the thought of a book sitting in a field in silence and then imploding got us giggling like crazy.

As we dove into our list the next day – we realized that much of what we wanted to do was completely odd or impractical so we narrowed it down to two ideas. The first was stringing the albums and some cans to the back of a car with “just married”. The second idea was reenacting the “Psycho” movie shower scene.

As Michelle and I ran through the grocery store purchasing twine, ketchup, tortilla chips, cheese, and taco seasoning (okay the last three were for dinner as we both were having Mexican food that night), we stumbled on Frank’s RedHot Sauce and Michelle squealed, IT WAS PERFECT.

So that’s how the third idea was born. The third idea that got her third place in the contest!

Here’s my “Psycho” shower scene. Ketchup EVERYWHERE.

This one didn’t make the cut, but we were having a blast shooting it! We drove around the block (and to Michelle’s accountant’s house to get some action shots- and they looked stupid so those didn’t make the cut).

Some outtakes, because you know there HAD to be some!

Ryan Brenizer’s Workshop :: DFW

I’ve been asked how and when I met Ryan Brenizer and that dates back to us sitting in the lobby of a hotel in Carefree, Arizona along with some of our other peers including the adorable Paul & Mechael Johnson, the always stoic Daniel Lane, and the utterly hilarious Brian Tao. We were editing files (you know, a photographer’s work is never done) and we just started chatting and we realized that we were already familiar with each other through the grapevine. That’s what the internet does – it makes the real world seem smaller and more friendly!

Four photography conferences later, we still hang out WAY too much and dance WAY too much at those suckers. So when talk turned towards a workshop in Dallas, I was happy to help Ryan host it. Now, Ryan realized very quickly that Fort Worth and Dallas are not the same thing. I have used them interchangeably when talking to non-Texans (eh, what do they know!) and I should have been more careful because when he announced a Dallas workshop and it was actually located in Fort Worth, he got kind of slammed for that, um, little detail. Eh, he’s from Manhattan, give the man a break!

And the perfect location for a lighting workshop would be Marty Leonard Chapel. I know, I know, I spend enough time there as it is. But I  should tell you how truly difficult shooting that chapel can be if you haven’t found your zen there. It throws  light streaks and halos at you like nobody’s business and then it kind of laughs in your face like a big old  mean bully.

Day one of the workshop sold out almost instantly and Ryan and I were just so stoked that we added a second day. I was preparing for a wedding at the chapel the following week that I was going to be shooting in film. (O yes, there’s that four letter f word that you never thought you would see again!)

So there I was, the ‘weird one’ with a film camera at the workshop, shooting a few rolls to find a new kind of groove with my shooting style and translating it all on film.. Fun note about the Canon EOS3 tat I was using – it has eye controlled auto focus which  tracks the movement of your eyeballs in the camera and adjusts the focus accordingly in the frame. Seems so high tech and savvy,  but alas, it never it made it to the digital SLR market as we know it now. In case you are wondering, I had to turn off the feature because it was driving me batty … and maybe that’s why it didn’t make it into the new stuff we are shooting with today!

Our first couple was Casey & Regan, photographed on my Canon 5d2 in full mid-day sun. Casey was a groomsman in Rachel & Gary’s wedding in 2009.

The second day, we had the awesomely awesome Samantha & Jonathan from Jonathan Ivy Photography. Open shade this time – Canon 5D2.

Holy Family Church, Fort Worth

I’ve never been asked to photograph a church before – you know, without their being a bride and groom involved in it somehow. When Monica reached out to me to document Holy Family Catholic Church for their website and promotional materials I was completely thrilled.

(If you are thinking this location looks familiar, Stephanie & Josh got married there a few Decembers ago.)

So it was just me and the stained glass windows that beautiful morning. Through the quiet and serenity, and I wove my way through the sanctuary and chapel, just seeing … and documenting. And it was just what I needed that day.

You can’t help but feel how close Stacy and her father are. His message was short and sweet, but it really touched Stacy.

Her dance with her father was sweet and lovely.

Danny’s mother is a fun little firecracker. They cracked up during the whole dance and talked about how wonderful the day was (I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop, I promise).
